Little Italy’s annual pasta eating competition, which takes place on Mulberry Street at the start of every July 4th weekend as a highlight of the Sorrento Cheese Summer in Little Italy festival, will be held this year on Saturday, June 30, at 4:00 PM, on the competition stage in front of Sal Anthony’s S.P.Q.R. Ristorante on Mulberry Street, between Hester and Grand Streets.
The 5th Annual Tuttorosso Pasta Eating Competition, featuring pasta by Rienzi Pasta, is expected to attract a large viewing audience as spectators and media focus on big eaters representing several Little Italy restaurants and cafes who will bring their appetites to the competition table to try and dethrone the reigning ‘Pasta Eating King of Little Italy’ – Victor Hugo Quintuna, a waiter at Caffe Sorrento – who last year devoured a record 4 ¼ pounds of cooked pasta in eight minutes to upset a strong field of competitors. Among them was Fabrizio Rinaldi, a waiter at Il Cortile, who had won the three previous pasta eating contests in Little Italy but who finished third in last year’s pasta eat fest.
Both Quintuna and Rinaldi are expected to be part of the field this year, joining six to eight other “big eaters,” who will not only be competing for bragging rights, but for the trophy and $250 cash prize that are awarded to the winner.
Admission is free. A limited number of seats will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Sorrento Cheese Summer in Little Italy is presented by the Little Italy Merchants Association (LIMA) with major support by Sorrento Cheese. Other sponsors of the summer-long festival include Bolla Wines, Peroni Beer, Rienzi Pasta, Tuttorosso, Vespa Soho and the Italian Tribune.
